Stewart & Tate Project Receives Award of Excellence
Stewart & Tate Construction is proud to share that the Maryland Bioenergy Center project in Jessup, MD, has been selected by a panel of judges to receive an “Excellence in Concrete Construction” Award by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Maryland Chapter in the category of Infrastructure with special recognition for Sustainability. Stewart & Tate Construction was the construction manager for this anaerobic digestion (AD) project.
Precast concrete work was performed by Dutchland Incorporated, of Gap, PA. Dutchland specializes in engineering, manufacturing, and constructing circular, rectangular and elliptical precast post-tensioned concrete tanks, custom designed wastewater treatment plants and other specialized concrete products for the water and wastewater industry.
Cast in place concrete work was performed by M2 Construction, LLC, of Lancaster, PA. M2 Construction specializes in new concrete construction, rehabilitation of concrete and new installations and upgrades to water and wastewater treatment facilities.
After the initial sitework, Stewart & Tate Construction commenced the construction of below-grade tanks and pits, on-site wastewater treatment facility, ground improvement work for foundation bearing, and the base slabs for the fermenter tanks. Erection of a pre-engineered metal building followed foundations, with all applicable process piping and mechanicals to support the facility’s operation. Finally, curbs, paving and bio-retention areas were then constructed.
Comprised of approximately 32,000 SF of processing building space and 7,800 SF of administrative space on a 4.75 acre site, this AD facility will transform organic waste once destined for incineration or already crowded landfills into renewable gas using microorganisms. The facility has the capacity to process 110,000 tons of waste per year and is co-located with the Maryland Food Center Authority, a major food distribution hub.
